Surviving Gustav

September 9th, 2008 at 01:47 am

Well, we made it through Hurricane Gustav. My home suffered minimal damage. My parents' home had a tree fall on it, but they and my younger sister were luckily unhurt. That's what matters the most. I got all my utilitie: phone, cable and power, back Friday night. My parents got power back Saturday night and the rest today. Oh, the joy of hot showers and baths. I'll never take that luxury for granted again.

My city got hit hard. Tuesday morning, since I'm considered essential personnel, I had to go into work. It looked like a war zone. Truly, it was something out of a movie. Trees on homes everywhere I looked, power lines down in the streets. We had a 8pm-6am curfew. Grocery stores are still mostly bare. Gas station lines wrapped around blocks. I lost a freezer full of expensive Jenny Craig food. My freezer and refrigerator are bare.

I never want to deal with anything like this again. Hopefully, Hurricane Ike will spare us this week.

I went through Hurricane Fran in NC back in 1995. It was like a scene from a war movie too, but you know the weirdest part? The second day after the hurricane, and for a couple of days after, the air was a crystal blue and was totally clear. No dust or smells in the air whatsoever - it all got scrubbed.

We were in Andrew so I know what you mean when you said it looked like a war zone. It was a horrible feeling seeing everything that was so beautiful the day before destroyed.

There were no street signs and you didn't know where you were going. My heart just goes out to all affected by these hurricanes and the ones affected by Ike.

hearing everyone's stories makes me glad i have only ever been in one cyclone and was only 4 - too young to remember much of it!

Yes, Hurricane Andrew hit our area pretty hard as well. We had only been living here a couple of months when it hit. I still remember that hurricane and how bad it was. At least this time I had someplace to go to that had utilities.

After Hurricane Katrina I remember thinking how it didn't go badly after all. We were all breathing a sigh of relief...then my aunt called crying that the levees had broken in New Orleans. I don't think I fully comprehended what was happening until I saw the pictures.

I'm worried about my friend in Galveston. She evacuated from New Orleans and relocated there after Katrina. Then she evacuated after Rita only to return and settle in Galveston. Now I don't know where she is or how she is doing. I recently exchanged my phone under warranty and somehow her number didn't transfer. I can't imagine where she'll go next.
