Facebook Marketplace

February 8th, 2020 at 05:03 pm

Does anyone here sell items on Facebook? I have had a real urge to declutter my home. I have given away closets of clothes, but for things that I have not used like candles I’d like to get some of my money back. I have a ton of Yankee & B&BW candles. 🕯

What has your experiences been selling on Marketplace?

Personally, I would not want to use Facebook Marketplace, but I would use Ebay. I don't want to have to meet strangers in parking lots or whatever. That's too weird for me.

I've used FB Marketplace to buy and sell stuff. We live in a townhouse development so I feel a bit safer than a stand alone home like CrazyLiblady mentioned. We have purchased some good deals, had some experiences where we felt that folks might have misrepresented stuff and we have had folks try to take advantage of us(can you deliver and take less $$). It was great when we moved and we had stuff to get rid of and new stuff we wanted to buy.

I've never used Facebook Marketplace, but will tell you that our local police department has an area near their front door with a camera for people who do sell online and meet people. Perhaps yours does as well.

I have used FB Marketplace to buy and sell many things. I've gone to people's homes sometimes, or met at a busy parking lot. So far have had no issues.

The one annoying thing is - well, people on there can be flakes. You'll sometimes go through 6 or more "interested" people before actually getting rid of the item. Other times it'll be gone quickly.

Take good, clear pictures and give a good description (spelling and grammar counts!)

I wouldn’t sell candles on EBay for the simple fact that the shipping costs would make it not worth the trouble. Nobody would want to pay the price it would take to recoup shipping alone, plus I would have to worry about shipping glass. I would meet buyers in a busy parking lot or at my local police station/sheriff’s department.

I have used FB groups specific to my area to post items for sale, rather than a full blast to entire city of FB users. I honestly do have people come to our home, usually when we are both home, but I have met people alone. I do not let them inside. I meet at the door and exchange or if large furniture meet in the garage. Every single person that has come has been normal, no worries on scams ect. I always state cash only, too.

I do have one story where it could have gone bad for me, but in the end went fine. I was selling a Lane Cedar Chest for $50. The woman arrives looks at it and says let's get it in my car, so I help her get it in there BEFORE money was exchanged. As she shut the doors, I realized that this could go bad, where she would refuse to pay and drive off. She proceeded to want to write a check. I was insistent initially for cash, but also realizing I would have to also help her unload the chest to make her go to an ATM. She showed me two forms of ID matching her checkbook and she really was super nice and didn't seem like a scammer. Fortunately, her check did clear with no issues.

It is important to remind buyers that you only accept cash (in exact amount), that you get the cash before they take possession of the item. I also do not give my address until they say they are on their way. Some will say can I get that tomorrow? Sure, message me when you are on your way and I will give you my address. Most are very understanding of that. It is okay to give an approximate area of the city you live in for people to determine if driving that distance is worth it to them. Usually a school or known landmark with in five minutes of your home is helpful.

I agree with terri, candles are not the best thing to ship, but a quick look at completed sales on eBay says that they definitely sell! I would guess some retired scents are in demand from people looking to get ahold of one they can get no other way.

The app I liked the best was Nextdoor.com, which doesn't seem great in my current area, but was great in the last one because it narrowed buyers to a certain radius of your home, so you really were selling to your neighbors.

The main reason I sell from my home is that I am not wasting my time driving around town, or twiddling my thumbs waiting on someone who is late.

I sell stuff on FB Marketplace all the time. I want to SELL stuff there, though, which means after doing a quick search on Marketplace for the item I am selling, to gauge the going prices, I price my item at a little less. This usually works to move it fairly quickly. People always expect bargain prices, so if your aim is "to make money," you'll likely be disappointed because your secondhand items don't fetch the prices anywhere close to what you paid for it.

I also always meet in the parking lot of my local library. People know where it is and it's a public place.

Thanks for all of the advice! I bought all of these candles at clearance so I’m okay with accepting less than the retail value. The point right now is to have them gone without too much of a loss. I am trying to prep in case I want or need to move. Next up will be getting rid of all my books!

Just want to add a recommendation that if you use eBay and ship something that's breakable, be sure to double box the item and use lots of packing material within both boxes. I've never had a breakage with something that was doubled-boxed.
